Volunteer Week

April 12, 2007

As proclaimed by the White House, the week of April 9th is National Volunteer Week.  You as a volunteer are an integral part of many businesses and organizations.

I sometimes feel like a volunteer at my job.  I only feel this way because of the pay or lack there of pay.  Though no one is to blame but myself, I did choose education as a career after all.  Being in the education field is like being a paid volunteer.  Of course there is a salary (and with some extra education– the pay goes up), but you still tend to give a fair amount of you own time to the students. This is even more evident for teachers in the private schools.  Private school teachers tend to donate more of their time for the students due not having the same budgets as the larger school districts.

One thing I have always wondered is if you could get fired from a volunteer position….it is your time that you are giving to them.  It is not like a paid job where if you don’t do something they can fire you because you are wasting their money.  But as a volunteer they are not paying you to do the job, they should be happy to have your time.  If you have ever been a volunteer and fired or “let go”, please post a comment, it would be really interesting to know what it takes to be fired from a job that you are not even being paid to do.

Well since this is Volunteer Week – have a great week — you all are very much appreciated!
